The Reluctant Hubby: No More Buddha Belly

The Reluctant Hubby: No More Buddha Belly

No more Buddha belly! It’s not often that I am stunned. But it just happened. Lisa asked me to step on the scale this morning when I got out of bed. That’s how we weigh ourselves in this household: naked and hungry. The number?  166.6 pounds. This means I’m seven pounds lighter than I was seven weeks ago, the last time I weighed myself. I’m not actively trying to lose weight, I’m not following a standard weight-loss eating plan, and I don’t believe I have a life-threatening illness. So, what’s the secret? I’m pretty sure it’s the dietary changes I’ve…

I am a Fair Weather Runner

I am a Fair Weather Runner

I am going to let you all in on a little secret.  I am not a hardcore runner.  I would like to say I am, I really do try to be.  But I am, alas, somewhat of a wimp.  I like running in the perfect conditions.  You know a beautiful fall day where you happily shuffle down a trail with the leaves changing and your hair blowing in the wind and not a care in the world. Did you know I have a little obsession with the Fall and leaves… What I am not a fan of is running in the…

Quotable Sunday: Live the Life You Want to Live

Quotable Sunday: Live the Life You Want to Live

Lately, I’ve been having an internal battle with myself regarding success. There’s no doubt I’m not living the conventional lifestyle of a 20-something. I don’t work in Corporate America, I’ve never known what it tasted like to get a big promotion, or wear a suit to work. I guess you could say I took the path less traveled. I quit my job to do what I love, am now attending school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to get my degree as a Holistic Health Counselor, and feel happier than I’ve felt in a long, long time. As my dad…

Healthy Food Trends for 2012

Healthy Food Trends for 2012

Jenn, from Personal Fit Coach, provides a quick view into foods to focus on. And Brussel Sprouts just might make an appearance in my house this year. This week’s Mamavation post suggested we share our latest healthy food discoveries. I decided to use this topic as an excuse to research recommendations from around the internet. Here are some great new foods I’ve found and look forward to trying. Artisan Multigrain Breads-It used to be that you had to seek out a local baker to get high-quality artisan breads. Now, chances are your local market is baking up specialty breads right in…

Home Sick for the Marathon

Home Sick for the Marathon

Remember when I did this… Post Marine Corps – sorry this picture never gets old That was officially over 2 months ago.  Since then, the furthest I have run is when I bumped into this dude running along the Strip at Night. Did you know this is the post of recycled pictures? Otherwise, I have been having a blast running 5Ks and enjoying a very hectic paced life.   A family affair Today, however, as I sat in awe of the Olympic Trials, I felt homesick.  Homesick for running a marathon or more specifically marathon training.  Sure, during marathon training,…

Ever wonder what your yoga students are thinking?

Ever wonder what your yoga students are thinking?

Ever wonder what your yoga students are thinking when they take your classes? I do. You look into their eyes and sometimes wonder if they’re enjoying themselves or not. I had someone in a recent class, a beginner, and he was working hard. Heavy breathing, a self-admitted newbie, eyes closed in what seemed like half-dazed confusion. When I went over to assist him, he turned to me with a big grin and said, “Thanks!” I must say, I was surprised. Bottom line: You’ll never know what they’re thinking, unless, of course, they tell you. Our goal as yoga…

Celiac Disease: The 411 on Getting Tested, Gluten Intolerances, & Gluten Free Recipes

Celiac Disease: The 411 on Getting Tested, Gluten Intolerances, & Gluten Free Recipes

The Healthy Chick gets real and down and dirty on Gluten-free.    [source]As many of you know, I follow a (mostly) gluten free diet because I tend to be sensitive to wheat and gluten-containing products. By mostly, I mean that I eat gluten free 90% of the time, but do allow myself Ezekiel bread as the gluten in this bread is easier to digest, as well as the occasional cheat (i.e. a Christmas cookie or freshly baked North End Italian bread while waiting for dinner). Since I’ve cut gluten out for the most part for almost three years now, I’ve…
