On our first visit to Aruba, Jeff and I drove around for hours looking for Madame Janette, a restaurant my mom raved about and told me I would love. We never found it. This time, since we went on vacation with my family, my mom made sure we got there. And we loved it so much that we went back again later on in the week! Madame Janette is an outdoor restaurant with trees and plants adding natural decor and strings of lights and torches creating ambiance. I was enamored with it the moment we walked in. On the first...

I recently returned from a much-needed vacation in Aruba with Jeff and my family. We stayed at Playa Linda, one of the high rises right on Palm Beach. Jeff and I shared a room with my little brother, and my parents and sisters shared another room. Each room was a studio with a double bed, a pullout sofa with a partition for privacy, a small table in the corner for eating at, and a balcony. The rooms were clean and just the right size for us. There was even enough space for all of us to pile into my parents’...

If you are looking for tasty local, organic, sustainable (and even gluten-free) pizza, Stone Hearth Pizza Co. is the way to go. Stone Hearth has three locations — one in Cambridge, one in Belmont, and one in Needham, with an Allston location on the way — and I was recently invited to the Cambridge location to sample some food and beer and learn more about Stone Hearth. I arrived first (after tackling all the stairs at the Porter T stop) and was immediately greeted by Alex Chamberlain, who does Stone Hearth’s marketing, and chef and general manager Michael Ehlenfeldt.
Don’t you hate when a recipe just calls for 1 cup of buttermilk and you’re stuck with an open carton with tons of buttermilk left to be used up? Sometimes I use dry buttermilk to avoid this problem, but there are certain recipes that I think come out better with real buttermilk. I wish I was better about thinking ahead and picking recipes that would use up all 4 cups of buttermilk in a carton, but I admit sometimes I just focus on the particular recipe I’m making. Most of the time any leftover buttermilk works its way into pancakes...

Not too long ago, I awoke bright and early on a Sunday morning, pulled back my hair, threw in my contacts, and headed to the kitchen to make a batch of doughnuts. The adorable farm stand buttermilk doughnuts pictured in Baked Explorations had been calling out to me for months, and I could withstand their charms no longer. Sometimes for me, it’s more about wanting to make things than wanting to eat them — as strange as that sounds. Don’t get me wrong… I wanted to eat these doughnuts after I made them, but I wanted to make them just...

Sometimes the things I decide to make in my kitchen are inspired by nothing other than a fridge full of odds and ends leftover from other dishes. Recently, I had a treasure trove to work with: onions (red and white), spinach, arugula, red cabbage, tomatoes (well, these were on the counter, not in the fridge), zucchini, bell peppers, asparagus, various cheeses, fruits, and more. I started thinking that I wanted to do something with the tomatoes and spinach, but I didn’t want to make a pasta (I’d been eating pasta in different forms for two weeks). An omelette sprang to...

A couple weekends ago Jeff and I went to Wrentham to do a little shopping. On the way there, we realized we hadn’t bothered to eat breakfast before leaving the house and we were both hungry. I started thinking about where we could stop to grab a bite to eat when I remembered there’s a Cracker Barrel at the entrance to the outlets, and Cracker Barrel serves breakfast all day. Jeff teases me for liking Cracker Barrel because he thinks it’s so not “me.” I think because my family used to stop at Cracker Barrels whenever we went on road...

I was so excited to check it out during Aragosta’s complimentary blogger party. Photo courtesy of Tiny Urban Kitchen.
If I must go to work (and believe me, my bank account tells me I must), I figure I need to have some things to look forward to, like lunch. While Kendall Square has been steadily filling up with more and more restaurants, one of my favorite lunch spots has always been the grill at The Blue Room. The grill is only open during the spring and summer, so once the weather gets nice, I constantly check The Blue Room’s website for those magic words: “The grill is open!” This year the grill opened at the beginning of May, and...
