Book Review: Lessons from a Former Fat Girl

Written by Biggest Loser contestant Amy Parham, 10 Lessons From a Former Fat Girl, talks about her struggles with food and her journey toward finding a healthy relationship with food and exercise. If you were a fan of the Biggest Loser at the time, which I was, you may remember that Amy and her husband were on the show together and Amy lost over 100 pounds. Although she was not the ultimate winner of the entire show that year, she and her husband have gone on to inspire entire communities to get fit and healthy. This book continues on that trend, but from a more personal perspective.

I found this book to be enjoyable, and touching at times. I think it is a good choice for anyone who might struggle with food addictions or for those who look to comfort themselves with food. Amy discusses the mental and emotional issues attached to being overweight as well as the physical and spiritual challenges she endured. One of my favorite parts is where she compares the mentality of the Fat girl vs. the Fit Girl. There are key takeaways here for anyone struggling with a negative self-image. As a woman from a broken home myself, I also related to Amy’s struggles as her parents went through a divorce.

Other lessons include making fitness your friend and dealing with stress in healthier ways. The book does also focuses on improving your relationship with God while trying to improve yourself.

Another great book by Amy Parham, co-authored with her husband, Phil, is The 90-Day Fitness Challenge and The 90-Day Fitness Challenge DVD. Check those out at the author’s website.
