Colonoscopys are FUN!

Hello! First of all, thanks for all your comments in support about my colonoscopy. I really appreciate it! It was awesome to have your encouraging comments and for those of you that shared your stories via comment or email, it was so helpful. So, how did it go?  Well, for those of you who said that the prep was the worst part- I could not agree more!!!!! The liquid diet was awful, considering I had burnt about million calories the night before- it was even more difficult for me to not eat. But I will say that drinking broth was a HUGE help. If you are getting any procedure where you need to be on a clear liquid diet, drink broth. It helps because unlike water, coconut water or Gatorade, it actually sort of tastes like food. So you are ALMOST fooled.

Here are my “eats” for all day yesterday:

Lunch: Low sodium veggie broth. I had two mugs full.

Snack: Coconut water

Dinner: Low sodium, all natural chicken broth

The broth pretty much saved me from diving head first into my fridge and eating and an entire head of lettuce. Around 7pm I began drinking the solution. I was given 4 flavors to choose from: pineapple, cherry, lemon-lime or orange.

I choose the Cherry and mixed it right in. Here is my jog ready to go….

Ok- let me tell you. This stuff was perhaps the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. The flavor made it SOOOOO much worse and I regret adding it 100%. It tasted like salt water, artificial cherry and poop all mixed together. I gaged every single time the solution touched my lips. I dry heaved throughout the whole hour and 20 minutes it took me to drink it. It was miserable! I just kept telling myself, “Girl, if you can run a half marathon with very little blood in your body, you can do this. YOU CAN DO THIS!” And in the end, I did it. I would like to say it is because I am a trooper. But, to be honest it was out of fear- 100%. I did it because I knew if I didn’t finish it, I would have to go through the whole thing again and that was simply not an option!

Yes, it then made me have to go to the bathroom. But that part was just more inconvenient than anything else. I missed some of the Sex and the City episodes I was watching. I didn’t even go that much, it was totally okay. NOTHING compared to keeping down that nasty liquid. I went to bed at around 10 pm because fighting down that liquid really, really wore me out.

I got up about 30 minutes before I needed to be at the hospital. I wanted to be in bed as long as possible because I knew I would be hungry (having not eaten in 36 hours) and crabby. I threw on yoga pants and a hoddie and was out the door. When I arrived at the hospital a nurse went over my health history and the procedure with me. She was a runner too so we talked a lot about our past and upcoming races. She is running a half marathon this weekend! When we were done she gave me a johnny to change into and I popped up on the stretcher. I then received an oxygen tube in my nose, an IV and some drugs. These drugs made me really relaxed. So relaxed in fact I thought it would be totally okay to tell the doctor that I found in very attractive. :)Oops! He was cute though. I then just drifted off to sleep and don’t remember a thing! I swear, nothing!

When I was awoken I was so upset that I had missed it! I really wanted to see my colon on the screen. I know it seems weird, but it is not everyday you get to see your organs, ya know?! I actually, still in my drug induced glory, asked if they would rewind the video and so I could watch it. They denied my request….bummer :(I fell back to sleep in the recovery room for about 20 minutes and then went home. On the way home, my mom stopped and got me an iced coffee, just the way I liked it. I hadn’t been able to have it in almost 2 days!

Around 1pm I finally felt the hunger come back and was psyched to eat!!!! I made a delicious salad: spring mix, tomatoes, red bell peppers, artichoke hearts, cucumbers, feta, topped with leftover turkey tips. It was soooooooo good, maybe because I hadn’t eaten solid food in almost 48 hours, but still- it was delicious!

My Take Aways:

  • Drink broth- it really helps to feel like you actually eat something.
  • DON’T add the flavor, the salty/sweet combo does not work for this kind of thing. I really believe the salt water would be so much easier to stomach. This process ruined cherry flavored things for me for life- and that is really sad :(
  • The procedure is a piece of cake. Actually, being silly and in a deep sleep for a while is actually kind of fun. There I said it, Colonoscopys are fun!!!!

My results were that everything was normal. This is great news! But, does not provide me with any answers as to what is going on with me. My doctor and I will be discussing what the next step in shortly.

In other news, I did get some great news yesterday in the middle of all my prep misery. Adam and I’s construction loan was approved!!!!!!!! We have been working on getting this together for almost a year. Between doing the plans with our architect, finding a contractor, going over contracts with a wide tooth comb, looking at all the opinion, visiting showrooms and gathering all the information for the bank; it was an insane process!!! But, it worked out and will be we starting construction at the end of the month, most likely! HELLO DREAM HOUSE!!! I am obviously going to do many, many posts on this so get excited. Um, just a spoiler alert- the kitchen I designed has 2 ovens. TWO OVENS!!!!

Also, equally as exciting (not), I have created an FAQ’s tab at the top of my blog to answer all those questions that I get over and over again. Just trying to make FFF more user friendly for you :)

Well, I am going to get moving here. I have some laundry that I need to pretend to do.
