Treadmill Workout: Make It a Double

Hooray! More treadmill workouts! I know you guys love ‘em.

Yesterday, on my half marathon training plan was 6 x 400m with 90 seconds rest. I hadn’t run in nearly a week, so I was ready to dominate this workout. Ninety seconds seemed like too much rest, so I cut it down to 45-ish seconds between intervals. Here’s how it looked on the treadmill.

2012-02-21_0829

Including a 1-mile warm-up, I covered 2.80 miles in less than 25 minutes. My run took much less time than I expected, so I decided to tack on a second treadmill workout. I haven’t done too many any long runs to prepare for my half marathon next month, so I figured better late than never and set out do an additional 5.20 miles to make an even 8 miles for the day. Here’s how this workout looked on the treadmill.

2012-02-21_0927

This workout took me about 44 minutes to complete.

Obviously, you can do one or both of these treadmill workouts depending on your goals and how much time you have available to you. You can also decrease or increase the speeds based on your abilities.

Happy running!

President’s Day Recap

Hi, friends! Happy Tuesday!

How was your President’s Day? Mine was really great—here’s a recap!

IMG_7349 (800x533)_thumb[1]

Lunch

Yesterday’s lunch was an arugula salad with all sorts of raw veggies, roasted Brussels sprouts, oven roasted French fries, truffle oil, and a big scoop of hummus in the middle. I kept my salad on the smaller side because I also really wanted a smoothie for lunch. I had a serious craving for one.

IMG_0229 (800x600)_thumb[1]

I made two smoothies—one for Mal and one for me—and they were a huge hit. Fruity, sweet, creamy… we could not stop talking about how delicious they tasted, so I immediately jotted down the recipe. Usually, when I make smoothies, I just throw a bunch of ingredients in the blender, but this one was a keeper!

Very Berry Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 1 6 oz container of blueberry-flavored Greek yogurt
  • 1.5 cups soy (or almond) milk
  • 2 scoops Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 2 tbsp ground flaxseed meal
  • 1 cup of ice cubes

Directions: Add ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth.

Serves 2

IMG_0235 (800x600)

With smoothies in hand, it was time to head out to meet our friends for an afternoon get-together. Murphy, however, really didn’t want to see us go. He was so sad.

IMG_0237 (800x600)

IMG_0239 (800x600)

IMG_0236 (800x600)

Poor pug. We’re taking him to the park today to make up for it.

In honor of President’s Day, Mal and I met our friends Josh and Courtney at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum to visit and explore. It’s the nation’s official memorial to President Kennedy.

IMG_7327 (800x533) - Copy

The JFK Library and Museum are located on the waterfront in South Boston. With it located so close by, so you’d think I would have visited a bunch of times by now. Nope. Yesterday was my very first visit.

IMG_7346 (800x533)

Visiting the JFK Library and Museum was one of those touristy Boston things I always wanted to do, but never got around to it, so I was happy to finally see what it was all about yesterday afternoon. The museum was really interesting and had so much to offer. Here’s Mal checking out a piece of the Berlin Wall on display.

IMG_7343 (533x800)

IMG_7333 (800x533)

IMG_7338 (533x800)

If you’re local and want to check out the JKL Library and Museum, it’s offering all sorts of fun activities this week in honor of President’s Day!

Dinner

After our time at the museum, the four of us drove to the South End for dinner. Yelp told us we’d like Picco, so we headed there. Yelp is so smart.

IMG_0247 (600x800)

I started with a Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, which was quite delicious—more hoppy than I usually like, but the floral taste and aromas made it enjoyable to drink.

IMG_0251 (800x600)

To eat, the four of us split the Alsatian pizza, which was topped with sautéed onions, shallots, garlic, crème fraiche, bacon, and gruyere. My goodness, it was amazing. The toppings were fresh and flavorful and the crust… wow. It was like nothing I have ever experienced. It was so light and fluffy. The texture was almost fried dough-like.

IMG_0256 (800x600)

I ate two pieces.

IMG_0257 (800x600)

During dinner, Courtney shared a sip of her Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro with me. It was so delicious, I needed my own. It was like a sweet Guinness. Mmm!

IMG_0261 (600x800)

None of us were planning to order dessert until we saw practically everyone around us ordering delicious-looking ice cream desserts. Mal was dying for some ice cream, so I told him I’d have a couple of bites of his Dark Chocolate Brownie Sundae because I had just ordered a sweet stout as my “dessert.” Well, the brownie sundae came out, and it was made with big chunks of brownie, Scharffen Berger hot fudge, Malt Chip ice cream, and topped with whipped cream. Ummm, yea. I ate about half of it.

IMG_0264 (800x600)

Picco was awesome—great atmosphere, good beer selection, tasty pizza, decadent desserts. We’ll definitely be back!

Fun times on President’s Day!

Bananas!

I am so cool. Actually, if you knew me in real life, you’d know that I’m rather awkward and pretty goofy. Mal actually thinks it’s one of my most “endearing” qualities, but he married me, so he says nice things like this. He knows the truth deep down. Anyway, here’s a story that exemplifies just how “cool” I am.

Yesterday, when Mal and I were grocery shopping, we split up in the produce section to divide and conquer our shopping list. On my list was sweet potatoes, onion, mango, and bananas. I found the first three items and then went over to the bananas to pick out a bunch.

I’m actually a little picky when it comes to bananas. I don’t like them under-ripe because I usually want to eat one the next day, but I don’t like them too ripe because I want them to last the whole week. And, then there’s the whole how-many-bananas-should-I-buy issue. It’s not like it takes me five minutes to pick out bananas, but I put some thought into my purchase.

Well, in typical Tina fashion, I was closely examining the bananas when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone standing next to me. I thought it was Mal, so when I finally selected the perfect bunch of bananas, I turned to him, held up the bananas, and enthusiastically said: “BANANAS!” like I had accomplished some great task. Well, unfortunately, this person was a complete stranger. Not Mal at all.

In reply, the random banana guy didn’t say a word to me. He actually didn’t even smile. I’m pretty sure he thought I was bananas. He just looked at me for a second and then picked out his own bunch. I thought the whole situation was pretty hilarious (and a little embarrassing), so I just smiled and then went to find Mal to tell him the story. Knowing me (and my supreme awkwardness), he found it absolutely hysterical and immediately started cracking up. Just another reason why I love my husband. He laughs at with me.

Breakfast

Strangely, I didn’t wake up starving like I normally do this morning, so I poured myself a glass of iced coffee with soy milk and got to work.

_MG_7290 (900x599)

About an hour later, my stomach started to grumble, so I made myself the most filling breakfast ever. Check out this mix of goodies:

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup liquid egg whites
  • 1/2 cup hemp milk
  • 2 tbsp sunflower seeds
  • Cinnamon
  • 2 scoops of almond butter

_MG_7305 (900x599)

My goodness, it was a satisfying breakfast. I almost didn’t finish it (something that never happens with breakfast), but it tasted so delicious, I killed that last few bites.

Question of the Day

Have you ever embarrassingly mistaken someone you didn’t know for someone you did? Please share your story!

P.S. I’m hosting a giveaway on Trading Up Downtown to win two jars of Barney Butter!

Brussels Sprout and Chicken Pizza with Parmigiano Reggiano

Ahhh, this is so cool!!

Remember when I mentioned my special recipe project with Whole Foods? Well, here’s my WholeFoods.com recipe debut: Brussels Sprout and Chicken Pizza with Parmigiano Reggiano!

Pizza3 (533x800)

I should have known it would be a pizza recipe! I <3 pizza.

Whole Foods compensated me for my participation and recipe development with a $50 gift card to their store.

Dinner

Mal and I combined forces to make last night’s dinner. On the menu: American Chop Suey and really, really, really delicious Garlic-Lemon Roasted Brussels Sprouts. Roasted garlic + tangy lemon + stinky cheese = holy yum.

IMG_0215 (675x900)

Garlic-Lemon Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound-ish Brussels sprouts, chopped in half
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • Salt + pepper to taste
  • Shredded Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400*F.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
  3. Pour Brussels sprouts on a baking sheet and roast for 30- 35 minutes, until crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
  4. Remove from oven and sprinkle with Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.
  5. Eat and enjoy!

IMG_0217 (900x675)

After dinner, Mal and I made hot cocoa with soy milk and watched Drive, another movie with Ryan Gosling in it. Apparently, we’re big fans of his lately.

IMG_0222 (900x675)

I enjoyed the first half of the movie, but then it became a disgusting, violent blood bath, so I stopped watching and read a magazine.

Murphy couldn’t believe what he was watching! Eww! (Isn’t it funny when dogs watch TV? Murphy loses it and barks/growls when he sees dogs on the television.)

IMG_0224 (900x675)

Even still, I enjoyed cuddling on the couch with my two favorite guys.

Super Saturday

Hello!

Sorry I went MIA yesterday. I ended up having a jam-packed Saturday, so I never had a chance to sit down to blog. I’m sure you understand how it goes with busy Saturdays!

Breakfast

My morning started with a massive bowl of banana oatmeal made with hemp milk, egg whites, ground flaxseed meal, and a scoop of Teddie peanut butter. Delicious and satisfying as always.

IMG_0132 (800x600)

Workout

After breakfast, Mal and I headed out for a workout. It was “Bring a Friend to CrossFit Day” at our box!

IMG_0134 (800x600)

I brought my blog friend Mary to the class. The two of us tried to plan a run together over the holidays, but it just never happened, so I invited her to join me for “Bring a Friend to CrossFit Day”. (I think she liked it!) The class was packed! We had over 30 people!

IMG_0136 (800x600)

Yesterday’s WOD was a partner workout, so Mary and I teamed up and dominated. We had one of the highest scores of the day (389)—and we didn’t “cook the books” like Mal’s team!

WOD: “Two’s Company”

150 Meter Run

As Many Abmat Sit-ups as Possible

150 Meter Run

As Many Push-ups as Possible

150 Meter Run

As Many Burpees as Possible

150 Meter Run

As Many Air Squats as Possible

150 Meter Run

As Many Medball Slams as Possible

150 Meter Run

As Many Walking Lunges as Possible

Score = total reps

Here’s how the WOD worked: one person ran while the other person did as many reps as possible. So, Mary started by doing the 150 meter run while I did as many sit-ups as possible. When she finished, she tagged me and then I headed outside to run while she did sit-ups. When we both completed the runs and sit-ups, we moved onto push-ups and so on.

Our score was determined by counting both of our reps completed on each of the exercises for a total score. The WOD wasn’t timed, so, if you’re Mal and his partner, this meant going slowly on the 150 meter runs, so the other person could rack up as many reps as possible. Their score was 570 while most people’s scores were in 300’s! I knew something was up when I blew by Mal on the sprints! Ha!

Snack

On the way home from CrossFit, Mal and I stopped at Marylou’s for iced coffees. I ordered a Peanut Butter Wonderful. Delish!

IMG_0139 (600x800)

We enjoyed our iced coffees while we cleaned the house, threw in some laundry, and someone registered for their Level 1 CrossFit certification. I’ll give you three clues who it is:

  1. It’s not me.
  2. It’s someone who needs a summer job.
  3. It’s someone totally in love with CrossFit (even more so than me).

Yep! Mal wants to teach CrossFit classes this summer at our box, so he’s getting his Level 1 certification this spring. How’s that for the perfect summer job?! He.is.psyched.

Lunch

Mal and I were running late to meet our hometown friends for a get-together, so we grabbed Subway for a quick lunch. I ordered a 6” ham sandwich with lots of veggies and honey mustard.

IMG_0141 (800x600)

At our friends’ house, I drank a couple of big (22-ounce) beers: Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

IMG_0142 (800x600)

And a Long Trail Coffee Stout, which was wicked good. It had strong, bold flavors of espresso, but it wasn’t overkill or artificial-tasting. It also packed a serious punch with 8% alcohol!

IMG_0150 (600x800)IMG_0147 (600x800)

I also munched on a bunch of cheese and crackers while we played a fun game called “The Game of Things.”

IMG_0146 (800x600)

We had a big group of people playing the game, so we were all having a good time and laughing a lot. Before I knew it, I drank both of my beers! Oops! I was having such a blast, I didn’t realize how quickly I was chugging them down. Thank goodness Mal was driving to our next get-together!

IMG_0149 (800x600)

The next stop of the day was at my sister’s house for dinner with my cousins and their significant others. I wasn’t planning to drink anything else, but then my sister offered me a Shipyard Applehead Ale, which I’ve really wanted to try. My thoughts about it: meh. Not that good.

At first sip, the Applehead sort of reminded of Harpoon’s Winter Warmer, which I like a lot, but the more I drank it, the more I disliked it. The cinnamon-apple flavor was much too sweet for me, and it totally overpowered the beer. In fact, it didn’t even taste like beer. It was just some weird apple-flavored beverage to me. Oh, well. Shipyard still makes a zillion awesome beers. I just won’t be buying their Applehead anytime soon.

IMG_0153 (800x600)

I also snacked on a bunch of tortilla chips with black bean and corn salsa.

IMG_0155 (800x600)

IMG_0159 (800x600)

Dinner

For dinner, my sister and her husband made a delicious chicken and steak fajita dinner.

IMG_0161 (600x800)

With all the fixings!

IMG_0164 (800x600)

Yummmmm!

IMG_0167 (800x600)

Treats for Murph and Batman!

IMG_0173 (600x800)

After dinner, I enjoyed a couple of sugar cookies for dessert.

IMG_0170 (800x600)

Mal and I didn’t get home until almost midnight last night, so I face-planted into bed as soon as I walked in the door. Good times! It was a super Saturday!

How was your Saturday?

Parking On Friday

TGIF! I am psyched the weekend is here! Mostly because I have a bunch of fun things planned, but also because Mal has all next week off (school vacation)! Woohoo!

On the agenda for this Friday morning: a trip to the dog park. It was a busy week for Mal and me, so Murphy didn’t get in his usual long walks. A trip to the park was much-needed today. This dog had energy to burn!

IMG_0103 (900x675)

On the drive to the park, I took a quick pit-stop at Marylou’s for a Maple Walnut iced coffee, which was pretty tasty, but I like the Almond Joy and Peanut Butter Wonderful flavors better. I’m glad I tried it though!

IMG_0104 (675x900)

IMG_0105 (900x675)

Murphy and I explored a new trail at the park today.

IMG_0110 (900x675)

This one led us into a big, open field.

IMG_0113 (900x675)

Which Murphy found very exciting.

IMG_0114 (900x675)

And proceeded to sprint around and elephant butt like a crazy pug.

IMG_0117 (900x675)

IMG_0118 (900x675)

IMG_0120 (900x675)

What a freak.

IMG_0119 (900x675)

Snack

After the park, I snacked on some almonds.

IMG_0122 (900x675)

Lunch

For lunch, I made a big salad, which I topped with a can of tuna, balsamic vinegar, and truffle salt.

IMG_0125 (900x675)

After lunch, I did a little baking and ate a bunch of cookies. Hey, it’s Cookie Friday! And at least these ones had some protein in them!

IMG_0129 (900x675)

Blueberry-Vanilla Protein Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups almond flour
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup dried blueberries

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375*F.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Mix well until batter is blended evenly.
  3. Roll batter into 1-inch balls and place on a greased baking sheet.
  4. Bake cookies for approximately 12 minutes.
  5. Remove cookies from baking sheet and allow to cool on wire rack.
  6. Eat and enjoy!

Makes 12 cookies

Off to CrossFit and then some beer drinking!

Happy Friday!

Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards

The 2012 Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards were quite the event. It was actually one of those experiences that inspired me to want to make a difference, which is part of the reason this post took so long for me to put together. I wanted to make sure it was as thorough as possible to help raise awareness about heart disease in women.

The Red Dress Awards, of course, were a fancy-schmancy event, complete with celebrities, red carpet, fancy (red) dresses, cocktails, glitz, glamour, and everything else that goes along with a fabulous Manhattan soiree. The purpose of the event was to celebrate the hard work of devoted individuals and their commitment to the fight against heart disease in women. Even though my photos show a good time had by all, the event supports a serious cause that needs more awareness brought to it.

With that said, I’m going to give you guys a quick recap of the cocktail hour before the awards ceremony and then move onto the important/serious information related to heart disease. Sound good? Great.

The Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards were held at the gorgeous Rose Hall at Lincoln Center. What a space. The views on the city were stunning.

IMG_0059 (675x900)

As a guest of Campbell’s, I had the opportunity to interview Richard Blais, the winner of Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars and the Campbell’s Healthy Heart Award Presenter at the ceremony. He was such a nice guy and totally down-to-earth. Even from our brief conversation, I could tell he was really passionate about cooking and healthy living.

I asked Richard if he was okay with me videotaping our interview so I could share it with my readers and he agreed. Yay! In our interview, I asked him about running the New York City Marathon, his inspiration for his Spicy Bouilliablais, what he thinks people would be surprised to know about reality cooking shows, and what his last meal on earth would be. As expected, I’m totally nervous and awkward in this video. Derp.

After I interviewed Richard, Theodora and I went in search of food and cocktails.

IMG_0025 (900x675)

IMG_0032 (675x900)

IMG_0041 (900x675)

We each started with a glass of sparkling rosé.

IMG_0026 (675x900)

And then we hit the appetizer table. The National Pork Board was one of the event’s sponsors, so there were a ton of pork-inspired dishes as well as fried calamari, a crouton bruschetta, and a selection of cheese, crackers, and breads. I helped myself to a little bit of everything.

IMG_0033 (900x675)

After we chowed down, Theodora and I headed over to check out the photo booth.

IMG_0038 (900x675)

Obviously, we needed to get a photo together.

MVSPhoto

Our next stop was the red carpet where things were bumpin’!

IMG_0040 (900x675)

Oh, hey, Dr. Oz.

IMG_0045 (900x675)

Dr. Oz was one of the honorees at the Red Dress Awards. (Cameras weren’t allowed into the awards part of the evening, so I only have photos of a couple of honorees that I snapped before it.) Besides hosting The Dr. Oz Show, he also directs the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and his research includes heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complementary medicine, and health care policy.

During the awards ceremony, Dr. Oz shared a story about performing open-heart surgery on a 25-year-old woman whose family brought her fast food the day after the operation. He said, at that moment, he realized that he wasn’t really doing his job if he didn’t educate his patients on the dangers of heart disease and what they could to prevent it. Dr. Oz actually said he’d much rather be put out of business than perform preventable open-heart surgeries. Ever since his experience with that young woman, Dr. Oz has been working to help fight heart disease.

Also on the red carpet was Star Jones, another one of the evening’s award honorees.

IMG_0055 (900x675)

I have to admit, I always thought Star Jones was just some attention-seeking, tabloid celebrity, but I learned that there is so much more to her. She’s best known as one of the hosts of The View, but did you know she’s also an attorney? Me either! She’s been a licensed attorney in New York for the last 25 years, and was a senior assistant attorney in Brooklyn before the age of 29. Impressive, right?

Anyway, Jones’ work in the law field isn’t why she was honored at the Red Dress Awards. A few years ago, she underwent elective open-heart surgery after being told she had the early signs of heart disease. Jones survived the surgery and her recovery with flying colors, so just a week after coming home from the hospital, she called the American Heart Association (AHA) and asked them what she could do to help their organization. Apparently, Jones could do a lot.

In 2011, Star Jones was named the American Heart Association’s National Volunteer and she’s been making heart disease awareness her life’s work since. Jones said she always thought heart disease was an “old white man’s disease,” but she now realizes it affects all kinds of people. As an African American woman, she says she’s proud to be the “face of heart disease.”

IMG_0054 (675x900)

I love this quote from Jones: “I learned late in life that my health is my greatest asset. For she who has health has hope. And she who has hope has everything.

Theodora and I only spent a little time checking out the red carpet because the awards ceremony was about to start. As I mentioned, I couldn’t snap photos inside, so I’ll do my best to recap without them!

IMG_0057 (900x675)

Hoda Kotb of the TODAY Show hosted the event, and she was really something else. I absolutely loved her. She was funny, witty, and so incredibly positive. Kotb is definitely one of those people who fully enjoys and appreciates life. Fun fact: Hoda loves Beyonce’s music!

Throughout the awards ceremony, we were entertained by a number of wonderful musical performances. Of note:

  • Violinist Caitlin Moe and DJ Mia Moretti: Impressive musical duo. Their music is high-energy and really funky. Great for working out!
  • Javier Colon: Winner of The Voice. He sang a goose bump-inducing “I Will Always Love You” as a tribute to Whitney Houston.
  • Sugarland: Jennifer Nettles was amazing! What a voice! I thought Sugarland would be totally cheesy, but they put on a great show.

After the honorees were presented their awards, each of them spoke to the audience for a few minutes. Of course, all of them were wonderful and impressive, but Regina M. Benjamin, the U.S. Surgeon General (no big deal), really wowed me with what she’s done for increasing heart disease awareness and public health in general. I tried to summarize her contributions and achievements in this post, but there are just too many to list. If you have a chance, please read up on this woman. She’s amazing.

Other honorees of note:

  • Dr. Martha Gulati, who is a pioneer in studying heart disease in women, after realizing that the previous standards were based off of men. She was also wearing a pretty sweet Oscar de la Renta dress and Louboutins.
  • Katherine Leon, who, with Laura Haywood-Cory, both victims of a spontaneous coronary artery dissection, work as WomenHeart champions to encourage women to take responsibility for their health.
  • And Shermane Winters-Wofford, who suffered a stroke on a first date. She had pain in her chest and shortness of breath, but just thought she was nervous. She asked him to take her home so she could lay down, but he wouldn’t listen, and took her to the hospital. Spoiler alert: they’re now married.

Source: Losing Weight in the City

During the awards ceremony, presenters and honorees referred to the “heart guidelines” and “warning signs” of a heart attack, and I can honestly say I didn’t know much about either. I figured some of you might be in the same boat, so here’s some information about both.

More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. But, according to the American Heart Association, 80% of cardiac events in women could be prevented through a healthy diet and lifestyle. So, the AHA defined what it means to have “ideal cardiovascular health” by identifying seven factors that impact health and quality of life, known as Life’s Simple 7:

  1. don’t smoke;
  2. maintain a healthy weight;
  3. engage in regular physical activity;
  4. eat a healthy diet;
  5. manage blood pressure;
  6. take charge of cholesterol; and
  7. keep blood sugar, or glucose, at healthy levels.

And the signs of a heart attack in women?

Signs of a Heart Attack:

  1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
  2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  4. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
  5. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain.

If you have any of these signs, don’t wait more than five minutes before calling for help. Call 9-1-1…Get to a hospital right away.

Source: Go Red for Women

During the awards ceremony, we watched “a little film about a super mom who takes care of everyone except herself” and doesn’t realize she is experiencing a heart attack.

If you watch the video, you’ll see that this woman ignores her heart attack symptoms because she’s too busy and doesn’t want to inconvenience others.

Many of the stories that I heard from honorees at the event involved seemly healthy (and some not-so-healthy) women, who thought their symptoms were no big deal until they experienced a cardiac episode. So, please know the symptoms of a heart attack and please take care of yourself. And please share that video with everyone you know.

I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to attend the Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards. I learned so much and left feeling very inspired. Thank you Campbell’s for inviting me!

How Do You Know You’re Getting More Fit?

Good morning! Happy Friday!

I’m still working on my post about the Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards, so, hopefully, I’ll have it up later this morning. It was an awesome event, and I have a lot to blog about!

Workout

I know I’ve said this a few times about WODs in the past, but “Kelly” was insanely hard! Yowsahs. I don’t think I’m the same after that workout. It was five rounds of 400 meter runs + 30 Box Jumps + 30 Wall Balls, which, as you can imagine, was a killer combination of exercises.

WOD:

“Kelly”

5 rounds for time of:

400 meter run

30 Box Jumps 24″

30 Wall Balls

Rx: (24”, 20″) (20, 14)

L2: (24″, 20″) (14, 10), 4 rounds

L1: (20″, 12″) (14, 10) 3 rounds

With two days of rest under my belt, I was more than ready for “Kelly.” I finished in 25:04, which was only 20 seconds behind the fastest woman (and 10 seconds faster than Mal) and it was the closest to a prescribed CrossFit workout I’ve ever done. (I used a 10-pound medicine ball instead of the 14-pound prescribed.)

Remember my first Level 2 workout? Well, I’m still bouncing around between Level 1 and Level 2 workouts, and I don’t think prescribed ones are in my future for many more months, but I’m seeing some real progress in my physical abilities. I’m stronger, quicker, and tougher. I could barely do a Level 1 workout when I started CrossFit, and now I’m knocking on the door of prescribed workouts. Booyah. I’m an animal!

The above photo (source: CrossFit781) is actually from a workout I did last week. I’m attempting a Squat Clean and getting frustrated that I can’t do it right. (Hence, the ridiculous face.) I still have trouble with them!

Dinner

Mal made hamburgers for dinner on Wednesday night when I was in New York City, so I chopped up a leftover one and added it to a big salad with balsamic vinegar and truffle salt.

Usually, I wolf-down my dinner in minutes, especially after a CrossFit class, but last night I was so exhausted after “Kelly,” it took me nearly 40 minutes to eat it! I kept getting distracted by American Idol and forgetting that my dinner was sitting in front of me, which never happens. Typically, food is my top priority at feeding time!

Right before bed, I got really hungry again, so I ate a container of Chobani with homemade granola mixed in. It was about 10:00 PM, so I never snapped a photo. I just ate it went right to bed.

Breakfast

This morning, I woke up craving oatmeal + peanut butter, so I whipped up a batch of stovetop oats with blackberries, ground flaxseed meal, and cinnamon.

No iced coffee with breakfast this morning because I’m going to stop by Marylou’s later this morning to try their new Maple Walnut flavor. Mmm!

Question of the Day

How do you know you’re getting more fit?

A Dog’s Purpose

Ok, this post might be a little cheesy, but I thought this story (forwarded to me via email) was so adorable and had such a great message, I just had to share it with you guys. I know the dog lovers will especially enjoy it.

A Dog’s Purpose

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”

The six-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher, you would learn things like:

  • When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
  • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
  • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
  • Take naps.
  • Stretch before rising.
  • Run, romp, and play daily.
  • Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
  • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
  • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
  • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
  • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
  • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
  • Be loyal.
  • Never pretend to be something you’re not.
  • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
  • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good. So, love the people who treat you right. Think good thoughts for the ones who don’t. Life is too short to be anything but happy.
